Unilever Cosmetics International, a New York company that manufactures cosmetics and fragrances for high-end international brands, claimed in late 2001 that law enforcement authorities in Jakarta, Indonesia, had seized a forty-foot shipping container of counterfeit versions of fragrances Unilever produces for brands including Calvin Klein, Chanel, Christian Dior, L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Valentino and others. The pirated colognes and perfumes had been manufactured in Barcelona and then sent to Jakarta for assembly with Taiwanese components. Unilever has identified Indonesia as one of the leading source countries for counterfeit fragrance products worldwide. The container of illicit fragrances seized in 2001 was just one of many shipped over the previous five years to markets in the Middle East and Latin America and its discovery led to location of additional counterfeit fragrances in Dubai, UAE. Unilever has also found a counterfeit manufacturing operation in the U.S., in New Jersey.
